Basket Weave Pattern Rose Bowls

It is the writer’s opinion that the Basket Weave Pattern Cased Glass pieces illustrated below, evolved from Stevens and Williams’ original Rd # 38983 below.

 Rd # 38983

Rd # 38983 was originally described as Pattern for the ornamentation of flint (leaded Clear) glass table ware.  “A square basket weave pattern was cut with a multi-mitre intaglio wheel.”

The reader will note that the case glass Basket Weave pattern differs in many ways from Rd # 38983.  One, is not a cut pattern, it received the pattern from pressing into a mold.  Two, it is not flint glass but Cased Glass.  Three, the actual physical pattern below differs from Rd pattern above.  However, the concept of the basket weave follows through from the Rd and is illustrated in the Cased Glass version.

We assume the pattern was simplified to make it easier to manufacture.  The Rd design illustrates four reeds up and down and four reeds sideways which was cut.  It appears the original patterned was simplified to one reed up and down and three reeds side ways.   This would make the mold manufacture easier and the molding process easier to complete.

Some of the photos are not the best quality in this section we will replace them with better photos latter.
